On Friday December 29, 2018, Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers return to the Cafe du Nord for an historic night of jazz, dance and creative retro culture.
The event starts with a dance lesson by Mr. Nathan Dias of Cat’s Corner, the Bay area’s favorite swing dance (held every Wednesday at the Swedish American Hall). Lavay Smith will perform classic jazz, blues, gospel and New Orleans music with her all-star 8-piece group. The event will also feature some beautiful body awareness in the form of classic burlesque by the amazing Ms.. Nutty Boltz.
From 1992-2004, Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers played at the Cafe du Nord to jam-packed houses every week, racking up over 600 shows at this beloved venue. Lavay's weekly performance at the Cafe du Nord became a Bay Area cultural phenomenon, exposing throngs of young people to some of the best jazz musicians in town, and helping to usher in the national swing revival.
Lavay and her band became a San Francsico institution, and even won the best band award in the 1998 San Francisco Chronicle/Examiner reader’s poll, ahead of Santana, Chris Isaak and other local favorites. Lavay’s appeal crossed boundaries, including swing dancing, blues and jazz, and she is now the most booked act in the history of the San Francisco Jazz Festival & Jazz Center.
Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers became a national touring act, and have performed at many of the most important jazz and blues festivals and clubs around the country. Lavay has headlined Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City on New Year’s Eve, and performed at the Academy Awards Governor’s Ball (the official Oscars after-party).
To this day, Lavay encounter folks from Boston to Bozeman who went on their first date and met the love of their life at one of her shows at the Cafe du Nord. More than one baby was conceived after a Lavay Smith performance at the Cafe du Nord.
Join us for a historic revival of a San Francisco cultural institution as Lavay Smith returns to the Cafe du Nord. We will be partying like it’s 1999!

Having lost its building in the 1906 Earthquake, the Swedish Society of San Francisco engaged Swedish-born, San Francisco architect, August Nordin to develop plans for a new building for the group to call home. Laying of the cornerstone took place in an impressive ceremony amid gala festivities and dedication of the completed structure, designated The Swedish American Hall, occurred on December 22, 1907 and the Cafe du Nord opened in January of 1908. For more than 100 years, this building has hosted a litany of events, cultural, music, and always social.
